Adult Neuropsychological Assessment for Memory & Cognitive Concerns

A neuropsychological evaluation involves objective tests of memory, attention/focus, other cognitive skills, and factors of mood/anxiety/personality to help determine how well a person’s brain is functioning. Such an evaluation is often conducted after an injury (stroke, heart-attack, car accident) or in older age, when rates of dementia become more common. Typically these evaluations consist of three parts, (1) a clinical interview, (2) testing, and (3) feedback that may include a diagnosis and treatment/safety recommendations to assist a patient’s health and daily functioning. These three parts can often be completed during one appointment.

Referral for neuropsychological evaluation is required. The referral should come from the patient’s health care provider who has the referral question(s), typically a neurologist, primary care doctor, or therapist. Common referral questions include:

  • My patient is an older adult (65 years+), are their memory difficulties due to a cognitive disorder or due to normal aging?

  • I believe my patient may be developing cognitive difficulties and I would like to establish a cognitive baseline profile against which future individualized comparisons might be made.

  • Are depression, anxiety, or personality factors the cause of my patient’s memory difficulties?

  • Patient suffered a brain injury (e.g., TBI, tumor, stroke), what are their current cognitive strengths and weaknesses?

  • Patient has a neurological condition (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy), what are the patient’s current cognitive strengths and weaknesses?

  • Does my patient have a neurocognitive disorder (mild versus major/dementia)?

  • Has my patient’s cognition worsened, improved, or stabilized since their last neuropsychological evaluation?

Note: We do not offer evaluations to diagnose attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorder (e.g., dyslexia), autism spectrum disorder, or evaluations for patients under the age of 18. We do not offer services in psychotherapy/talk therapy or counseling.

Psychological Evaluation for Presurgical & Transplant

Psychological evaluations for presurgical & transplant patients are conducted with the goal of evaluating several factors (e.g., psychological health, cognition, coping abilities, treatment adherence, substance abuse, and social support) useful to presurgical teams when considering which patients are most likely to benefit from a procedure. These evaluations are also useful to determining a patient’s likely postoperative needs.

Referral is required from a member of the presurgical health care team for the following procedures:

  • Renal/kidney transplant

  • Liver transplant

  • Stem cell transplant

  • Bariatric surgery

  • Neurostimulator placement
